Anambra State High Court sitting at Neni has convicted two brothers, Izuchukwu Obinaju and Obinna Obinaju, of 3rd August 2022 murder of their uncle, Mr. Bertrand Obinaju; said to be a victim of Boko Haram crisis who returned to his home town from Sokoto after losing everything.

The deceased was said to be living at the mercy of his in-laws and relatives, and when he failed to show up for a promised handout one day, one of his in-laws who served him in the early years grew concerned and set out in search of him.

It was gathered that though misled by the defendants that their uncle; the deceased, had taken a trip to Asaba, the said in-law still had no luck in locating him, after which he reached out to his friend who is a member of Nimo Vigilante Group, and with the help of the vigilante friend, they began searching for him afresh till their search led them to the defendants’ house where they discovered a sack filled with suspected human remains; despite efforts of the defendants to cover their tracks.

The police were alerted, and the defendants were arrested.

During the trial led by the Anambra State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Sylvia Ifemeje, and Assistant Chief State Counsel, Chiamaka Chukwuka, the prosecution presented four witnesses, while the Defense presented one sole witness, and after consideration of evidence and arguments, the court presided over by Justice Onyinye Anumonye found the defendants guilty of conspiracy and murder, and adjourned to 3rd October for their sentencing.
