Kwara State Government Drags Saraki To Court
The Kwara State Government has taken former Senate President Bukola Saraki to court over alleged criminal defamation linked to comments he made about Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s educational background.
The case was filed at the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin by top state legal officers.
The government claims Saraki made false statements on April 17, 2026, through social media and newspapers, alleging that the governor did not complete secondary school.
It said the publication was damaging, capable of provoking unrest, and breached provisions of the state’s penal laws on defamation and public order.
During court proceedings, state lawyers asked the judge to issue a bench warrant after Saraki failed to appear despite being served court papers.
His legal team challenged the case, arguing that the court lacked jurisdiction and that proper service was not carried out, while also seeking an adjournment.
The court fixed July 3, 2026, for hearing of preliminary objections and possible arraignment.
The dispute adds to ongoing political tension in the state, where both sides continue to trade accusations over governance issues, past investigations, and freedom of expression.
