The Hisbah Command of the Bauchi State Sharia Commission has announced new regulations for social events, banning Disk Jockeys (DJs) and prohibiting women from attending male gatherings.
In a statement dated July 16, 2025, and signed by Permanent Commissioner Barrister Aminu Balarabe Isah, the Commission said the measures were in response to public complaints over rising social vices and disturbances during weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations.
The document, titled ‘Guidelines Governing the Conduct of Marriage Ceremonies and Other Festivals in Bauchi State’, outlines several prohibitions, including the mixing of sexes, dancing with the opposite sex in the presence of children, consumption or sale of alcohol, and carrying weapons into venues.
Additional directives include gender-segregated seating, suspension of activities during prayer times, and strict adherence to traditional dress codes. The guidelines also forbid abusive or blasphemous language toward individuals or authorities.
Only women are permitted at female gatherings and men at male gatherings. Traditional and cultural events such as Sharo, Shadi, Garaya, Kauyawa Day, as well as DJ entertainment, Gala, and Aloba, are prohibited. Gambling, prostitution, pornography, and birthday celebrations deemed immoral are also banned.
“All recreational centers, clubs, and cultural organizations must comply with these directives or face appropriate sanctions,” the Hisbah circular warned.
When contacted, Hisbah Commander Muhammad Muhammad Bununu confirmed the issuance of the circular, saying, “Yes, it is from us. We issued it.”
