Benue APC Peace Talks Collapse
Fresh tension has erupted within the Benue State chapter of the All Progressives Congress after a peace meeting meant to settle internal disputes ended in disagreement over alleged automatic tickets for elected officials ahead of the 2027 elections.
The crisis has further exposed divisions between Governor Hyacinth Alia’s camp and supporters of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
The closed-door meeting held in Makurdi brought together top APC figures, including former Governor Gabriel Suswam and several lawmakers, in an effort to rebuild unity within the party.
Trouble started after Akume reportedly suggested that Governor Alia and all APC lawmakers should automatically return for another term in office.
Governor Alia quickly distanced himself from the statement, insisting that only the party leadership has the power to decide on candidate selection.
Members of the committee that drafted the meeting communique also denied approving any agreement on automatic tickets, describing the circulated document as misleading and unauthorised.
Despite public calls for peace and reconciliation, the disagreement has deepened suspicion between both camps.
Party leaders are still expressing hope that ongoing dialogue and intervention from national APC figures could prevent the crisis from worsening ahead of the 2027 political battle.
