Veteran actress Bimbo Akintola has voiced concerns that Nollywood has drifted away from its passion-driven roots, placing greater emphasis on appearance than on artistic dedication.
In a conversation with fellow actress Ayo Adesanya, Akintola lamented that many actors today prioritise glamour, makeup, and body enhancements over storytelling and craft.
Reflecting on the early days of Nollywood, she recalled the long hours and sacrifices made to bring stories to life without the promise of pay or comfort. She expressed worry that the industry now values outward appearance over meaningful content, a trend she described as fleeting and ultimately unfulfilling.
“Now, people are saying, ‘My makeup isn’t right for this, and I can’t wear this.’ Is that what the film is about? We are more concerned about our outfits and how we look. This is why, generally, there is a spark in BBL. It is now about looks and not content or what one has. Looks will fade no matter what you do,” Akintola said, highlighting the shift from artistry to aesthetics in contemporary Nollywood.
