Chelsea, without a permanent manager, snatched a dramatic 1-1 draw at Manchester City thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Enzo Fernandez at the Etihad Stadium.

The result came just three days after Chelsea parted ways with Enzo Maresca, leaving Calum McFarlane—normally in charge of the under-21s—to oversee the first team on an interim basis. While Liam Rosenior is reportedly a leading candidate to take over permanently, McFarlane guided the squad with composure against a City side chasing Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Pep Guardiola’s team had taken the lead in the 42nd minute when Tijjani Reijnders unleashed a powerful left-footed strike, giving City a deserved advantage. Erling Haaland had earlier hit the post, and despite creating several promising openings after the break, City could not convert their dominance into a winning goal.

Chelsea’s equaliser came in stoppage time after City’s makeshift defence, disrupted by Josko Gvardiol’s injury, failed to deal with Malo Gusto’s cross. Fernandez was perfectly positioned to finish on his second attempt, sparking celebrations among the travelling fans and salvaging a valuable point.

Fernandez’s performance highlighted his growing influence. The Argentine has now scored six league goals this season, matching his tally from last term. While Cole Palmer struggled against his former club, Fernandez excelled in midfield, taking three shots (second only to Haaland’s five) and leading Chelsea in touches in the opposition box (four) and chances created (two).

Statistically, Chelsea produced the higher-quality opportunities despite being under pressure for much of the game. The visitors registered 1.73 expected goals from eight attempts, compared to City’s 0.99 xG from 14 shots, reflecting the dangerous nature of Chelsea’s attacking play.
