Cooking Gas Prices Increases Again
Nigerians are paying more for cooking gas despite a rise in local production and a drop in imports over the past year.
Data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority showed that domestic suppliers now provide most of the country’s LPG needs, yet retail prices continue to climb.
Local production stayed between 3,300 and 4,500 tonnes daily, while imported volumes fell sharply during the period.
Even with the stronger supply, cooking gas now sells for as much as N2,000 per kilogramme in some locations, putting more pressure on households.
Marketers blamed the increase on supply chain difficulties and shortages in some areas.
The higher cost has pushed many families and small businesses back to charcoal and firewood, raising concerns about the future of clean cooking energy.
Industry stakeholders said ongoing gas infrastructure projects could improve supply nationwide when completed.
However, they warned that rising domestic output alone may not reduce prices unless distribution challenges and other market problems are resolved.
