NUT Begins Strike As Tinubu Sends Security Reinforcement
President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards for Oyo State and ordered security agencies to step up efforts to rescue pupils and teachers abducted from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area.
A Federal Government delegation delivered the directive during a visit to affected communities, assuring residents that operations were underway to secure the victims’ freedom.
The move followed the abduction of dozens of pupils and teachers on May 15 by armed men who attacked schools in the Esiele and Yawota communities.
The government said security forces would rely on intelligence and carefully planned operations to bring the captives home safely while considering requests for stronger security presence in the area.
As rescue efforts continued, the Nigeria Union of Teachers ordered an indefinite strike across Oyo State from June 1, directing teachers in public primary and secondary schools to stay away from work until the abducted pupils and teachers regain their freedom.
The union also announced nationwide solidarity rallies to demand better protection for schools and educators.
The crisis has drawn reactions from various groups, including SERAP and the Nigerian Baptist Convention, both of which urged stronger action against insecurity.
Community leaders also called for improved security measures, while the Federal Government pledged to sustain efforts until all victims are safely reunited with their families.
