Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has appointed his nephew, Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as Chairman of the Osun Sports Trust Fund.

The announcement was made by Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Kola Adewusi, during a courtesy visit from the Osun State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).

Adewusi explained that the appointment is part of the state government’s efforts to revamp sports in Osun and establish a sustainable funding model through collaborations with both private and public sector partners.

“We are in advanced stages of setting up the Osun State Sports Commission, which will coordinate sports administration, development, and policy implementation,” Adewusi said. “The Sports Trust Fund is designed to attract support from sports philanthropists locally and internationally, ensuring long-term financing for sports initiatives.”

He added that Davido accepted the role enthusiastically, noting that the musician’s global reach and influence would help draw significant funding and attention to Osun’s sports sector.

Adewusi also reaffirmed that the renovation of Osogbo Township Stadium is ongoing and on track to meet Olympic standards. “The goal is to transform the stadium into a world-class facility capable of hosting both national and international events,” he said.

With Davido at the helm of the Sports Trust Fund, the government aims to usher in a new era of sports excellence and infrastructure development in Osun State.

The appointment has sparked discussion online, particularly over Governor Adeleke’s practice of assigning family members to key positions. In 2023, he had appointed another nephew, Tunji Adeleke, son of former governor Isiaka Adeleke, as Chairman of the Board of Local Government.
