Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, has faulted United States President Donald Trump for describing Nigeria as “a disgraced country,” calling the comment offensive, disrespectful, and undiplomatic.
Trump had made the remark during a White House press briefing, warning that the U.S. would “take decisive action” if the alleged killings of Christians in Nigeria continued.
Reacting in a viral video on Friday, Jibrin condemned the threat, saying Trump’s words violated diplomatic standards and international law.
“For the President of the United States to say, ‘Oh, you are doing this and we are going to attack you, and Nigeria is a disgraced country’ — this is totally unacceptable,” Jibrin stated.
“We believe he should reconsider, retract that statement, and apologise to Nigeria.”
The Deputy Senate President stressed that Trump’s words were inconsistent with the values America often claims to represent, adding that no world leader had the right to issue threats of force without following due diplomatic process.
“It’s against international law. Whatever your grievances may be, go through the legal route — approach the United Nations, get a resolution, and follow due procedure. Ignoring that process is unacceptable and un-American,” he said.
Speaking to an applauding crowd, Jibrin maintained that Nigeria would not be intimidated by Trump’s remarks.
“We are not afraid to speak the truth. If Trump were here, I would tell him directly that his actions breach international law and that this path he’s taking is the wrong one,” he added.
He urged the U.S. government to pursue diplomacy instead of confrontation, stressing that mutual respect and dialogue remain the foundation of sound international relations.
