The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency across the region in response to recent coups and attempted mutinies.
ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray made the announcement on Tuesday during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level held in Abuja.
He said the wave of military unrest underscores the urgent need for the region to reflect on the future of democracy and strengthen security measures.
Touray added that the situation highlights “the imperative of serious introspection on the future of our democracy and the urgent need to invest in the security of our community.”
