Victor Osimhen has come under fire from Nigerian football fans following a tense confrontation with Ademola Lookman during the Super Eagles’ 4-0 demolition of Mozambique in Monday’s Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 clash.
The incident occurred in the 63rd minute when Lookman failed to square the ball to Osimhen, who was unmarked in the box. Television footage showed the Galatasaray striker reacting angrily, pulling away from captain Wilfred Ndidi before pointing at Lookman and shouting at him. He was later heard saying in pidgin, “No try am again,” meaning “don’t try that again.”
The outburst raised eyebrows, especially as Lookman had already been instrumental in Osimhen’s performance, providing a direct assist for one of his goals and playing a role in another chance that was finished by Akor Adams.
Moments later, Osimhen asked to be substituted and was withdrawn for Moses Simon, with sections of the crowd booing him as he left the pitch.
The confrontation quickly became a talking point on social media platform X, where many fans criticised the striker’s conduct despite Nigeria’s commanding display.
Emma Ik Umeh (@emmaikumeh) wrote, “Victor Osimhen had a quarrel with his teammate Lookman. Crazy, but this same Lookman provided him with an assist for his second goal earlier. The guy should f**k off with this nonsense attitude. It’s so annoying.”
Godwin Wilson described the episode as “Very silly behaviour as usual. Nonsense.”
Oladapo Omolade said, “I really don’t understand why the guy is behaving like that… he really needs to calm down on that unnecessary attitude.”
Victor Adeboje simply reacted, “Very irritating.”
Edwin Uka added, “Can you imagine the attitude he displayed there? Mtcheeeew.”
ID (@oluwatunmilara1) questioned Osimhen’s timing, writing, “What’s the meaning of this one? The team is winning and playing well. Why do you want to spoil it with this temper tantrum?”
Bigrated (@the_boy_rated) suggested ego was at play, saying, “The guy too proud, he thinks he’s better than everyone in the team.”
Stanley Ogb (@stanogbo97) concluded, “Very unprofessional of Osimhen…He got some attitude problem right there.”
Away from the controversy, Osimhen still ended the match with two goals, while Lookman delivered two assists and scored once as Nigeria recorded their fourth consecutive win at the tournament to seal a place in the quarter-finals.
The Super Eagles will next face either Algeria or DR Congo as they continue their push for a first AFCON title since 2013.
A player with no discipline. He does this all the time shouting at an important member of the squad just because the other player is calm-headed. This is one of the attitude issues Chelsea PR have complained about.
