IPOB Slams Soludo Over Comments On Kanu Release
The Indigenous People of Biafra on Monday defended renewed calls for the release of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, following fresh remarks linked to Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State and his aide.
The group also reacted to criticism directed at the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his appeal for Kanu’s freedom.
The controversy began after Peter Obi, during a recent interaction with Nigerians in Washington DC, restated his position that there was no justification for Kanu’s continued detention.
His comments sparked backlash from Ejimofor Opara, media aide to Governor Soludo, who described the remarks as an attack on judicial decisions in Nigeria and Finland.
IPOB, through its spokesperson Emma Powerful, faulted the position of the Anambra State government camp, accusing them of shifting stance on the matter.
The group recalled earlier instances where Soludo was said to have supported Kanu’s release, including a reported visit to him while in DSS custody in 2023.
The group maintained that Kanu’s detention remains unjust and insisted on his unconditional release.
Kanu is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted on terrorism-related charges by a Federal High Court in Abuja in 2025, a ruling his legal team has since appealed.
