Babachir, Atiku Clash Over ADC Primary Outcomes
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has quit the African Democratic Congress, claiming the party’s presidential primary was manipulated in favour of Atiku Abubakar.
He said backing Atiku’s bid for the presidency would only make it easier for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to secure another term in office.
Lawal alleged that the primary process was compromised at different levels, insisting that candidates loyal to Atiku were imposed while genuine winners were sidelined.
He argued that the exercise weakened confidence in the party and pushed him to distance himself from what he described as a flawed political project ahead of 2027.
The former SGF also questioned Atiku’s leadership credentials, saying he does not believe the former vice president can address the economic and security challenges facing the country.
He predicted that Atiku’s political movement would eventually struggle against the ruling party’s influence before the next election.
In response, Atiku’s camp dismissed the allegations, accusing Lawal of rejecting the process only because his preferred candidate failed to win.
The camp maintained that the primary was transparent and reflected the wishes of party members, insisting that no evidence had been presented to support claims of manipulation.
