Oyo Schools Shut Over Abduction Crisis
Public schools across Oyo State were shut on Monday as teachers began an indefinite strike over the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
The action followed growing frustration over the continued captivity of the victims taken during attacks on three schools in May.
The strike recorded wide compliance across the state, with many schools turning students back at the gates.
Only candidates writing the ongoing WASSCE and teachers assigned to examination duties were allowed into school premises.
Similar reports of compliance came from Ogbomoso, Oyo, Saki, Eruwa and other towns.
At the same time, protesters flooded major streets in Ibadan, demanding the safe return of the abducted pupils and teachers.
Demonstrators carried placards calling for an end to insecurity and urged authorities to focus on rescuing the victims rather than political activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
The wave of concern spread beyond Oyo as residents in Ogun State staged solidarity protests, while the Nigeria Union of Teachers in Osun called for tighter security around schools in border communities.
Authorities in Osun have also moved to strengthen school safety measures as fears grow over attacks on schools in the region.
