Afrobeats singer and activist, Seun Kuti, has reacted to criticism from Wizkid fans following a controversy surrounding the nickname “Big Bird,” insisting that the moniker belongs to him and should not be taken over by the superstar singer.

The exchange began during Seun’s Instagram Live session when a Wizkid fan asked him to drop the nickname, arguing that Wizkid is the “Biggest Bird.” Seun rejected the request, maintaining that he had used the name long before Wizkid.

According to him, Wizkid took the nickname from him and should create an original identity.

“Wizkid stole my name. Tell your favourite to be original. Why are you telling me to change my name? I can’t change it. This name has been here for a long time. I came up with it first,” Seun said.

He also criticised Wizkid’s camp, including DJ Tunez, accusing them of enjoying comparisons between Wizkid and his late father, Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, instead of shutting such narratives down.

Seun said the comparisons encourage fans to drag Fela’s name into unnecessary music arguments.

“If I see DJ Tunez again, I will confront him because he and the team are enjoying the Wizkid and Fela comparison instead of debunking it. I won’t even hug him,” he said.

During the video, Seun revealed that he recently received $120,000 simply because he is Fela’s son, explaining that his father’s legacy continues to bring him benefits years after his death.

“I recently received about $120,000 just because I am Fela’s son. It is not my work. My father has been dead for over 29 years, and I still received it,” he said, adding that his father continues to bless him from the grave.

He challenged critics by questioning how many people could benefit financially from their parents’ legacies after death.

“How many of your fathers can send you $120,000 from the grave? You think you can just open your mouth. None of your fathers has accomplished what mine did. You don’t understand what it means to be the child of someone who truly accomplished something,” he added.

Seun clarified that his comments were not an attack on Wizkid personally, but a response to fans who, in his view, show disrespect to history.

“Keep Fela’s name out of your mouths,” he warned Wizkid’s fanbase. “Why must you always find a way to drag Fela into your discussions?”

He further challenged Wizkid fans to channel their energy into something meaningful instead of online arguments.

“I will spend four days dragging Wizkid FC. They say they are over one million. Let them contribute ₦1,000 each for their favourite. That is ₦1 billion to build a school in Surulere in Wizkid’s name,” he said.

According to him, the fanbase excels at insults rather than positive initiatives.

“All they do is insult people. Who raised you? You cannot come together to do something positive in the name of the young man,” he added.

Seun also rejected claims describing Wizkid as the “New Fela,” insisting that his father’s legacy is unique and cannot be replicated or compared.
