Officers of the Nigerian Air Force have engaged senior United States government officials and representatives of Bell Textron to accelerate the delivery of 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s counterterrorism and internal security operations.

The Programme Management Review meeting was held in San Diego, California, from January 5 to 6, 2026, and was led by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke.

According to the Nigerian Air Force spokesperson, Ehimen Ejodame, discussions at the meeting centred on reviewing the progress of the helicopter acquisition programme, resolving logistical concerns, and ensuring that delivery timelines and budgetary commitments are met.

“In a strategic move to enhance operational capacity, the meeting was aimed at fast-tracking the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z helicopters, aligned with the CAS’s philosophy of building a highly motivated, professional, and mission-ready force capable of delivering decisive airpower effects in synergy with ground forces,” the statement said.

Air Marshal Aneke commended the United States Government and Bell Textron for their professionalism and transparency throughout the process, describing the acquisition as more than a routine platform upgrade.

“This acquisition reflects the enduring defence cooperation between Nigeria and the United States and underscores our shared responsibility for regional and global security,” he said.

He assured that the Nigerian Air Force would take all necessary steps to ensure the helicopters are delivered as quickly as possible, while stressing the need for the programme management team to remain innovative, solution-focused, and committed to meeting operational standards and deadlines.

Aneke also acknowledged the support of President Bola Tinubu, crediting him for his consistent backing of the Air Force.

The AH-1Z attack helicopters are expected to significantly enhance the Nigerian Air Force’s combat effectiveness, operational efficiency, and overall mission readiness.

With advanced precision-strike capabilities, the helicopters will allow for more accurate operations, minimise collateral damage, and provide timely support to ground troops, thereby protecting lives and property in affected communities.

Nigeria’s plan to acquire the 12 AH-1Z helicopters, valued at 455 million dollars, received approval from the United States government in April 2022, when the Defence Security Cooperation Agency cleared the potential Foreign Military Sale.

Bell Textron was officially awarded the production and delivery contract on March 12, 2024.

The meeting also reflects the broader security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.

On Christmas night, US forces conducted airstrikes in Sokoto State against Islamic State-linked militants working with the Lakurawa jihadist group and local armed bandit networks.

Following the strikes, Nigeria is expected to assume a leading role in subsequent counterterrorism air operations, while US forces shift primarily to intelligence support, although further strikes remain possible if required.

The Sokoto operation came after diplomatic tensions over allegations of persecution and violence against Christians in Nigeria, which President Donald Trump described as “genocide”, claims that were firmly rejected by the Nigerian government.

The disagreement has since been resolved, leading to renewed and strengthened cooperation between both countries. Security analysts have noted an increase in US reconnaissance flights over Nigeria, signalling a sustained commitment to joint security objectives.

The renewed engagement and expedited helicopter delivery highlight Nigeria’s strategic focus on enhancing airpower and confronting insurgency, particularly in the North-East and North-West regions, where Boko Haram, Islamic State factions, and armed bandits have carried out attacks on civilians, security forces, and critical infrastructure for more than a decade.

Air Marshal Aneke reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to tackling terrorist and criminal threats with professionalism, accountability, and restraint, while maintaining public confidence in its operations.

He said the acquisition of the AH-1Z helicopters represents a decisive step towards building a capable and responsive air force equipped to address evolving security challenges and strengthen national and regional stability.
