IPOB Orders Stay at Home For Remembrance Day
The Indigenous People of Biafra has urged residents of the South-East and supporters in the diaspora to observe May 30, 2026, as a day of remembrance for those who died during the Nigerian civil war.
The group asked people to stay indoors as part of a peaceful stay-at-home order across the region.
In a statement released on Friday by its spokesperson Emma Powerful, IPOB said the annual event, known as Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day, is meant to honour those who lost their lives during the conflict.
It described the day as a period for reflection on the history and suffering linked to the war.
The group said the memory of the civil war victims would not be forgotten, despite what it called efforts to silence or rewrite historical accounts.
It added that the day represents a bond between the living and the dead and should be observed in calm and respect.
IPOB also directed residents in the South-East and supporters worldwide to suspend normal activities and remain at home on May 30.
It said the remembrance is not for celebration but for mourning and reflection on the events of the past.
