The National Democratic Congress has fixed May 28, 2026, for the start of its primary elections ahead of the next electoral cycle. The party said it was forced to suspend its planned electronic voting system because of limited time.
The announcement followed meetings involving party leaders, aspirants and members of its working committees.
The decision was reached was during marathon discussions led by the party’s National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, alongside presidential aspirant Peter Obi and other officials.
The party also received the report of its screening committee chaired by former Ebonyi governor Sam Egwu. Officials said the number of aspirants was far beyond expectations.
They abandoned electronic voting was due to pressure created by the electoral timetable and logistical challenges. The party explained that all aspirants who purchased Expression of Interest Forms would now participate using manual procedures.
It added that only successful candidates would later complete full documentation and nomination processes.
How the primaries will be conducted includes direct primaries for State Assembly seats and separate affirmation exercises for higher offices at local government headquarters.
The party warned against violence and promised sanctions for intimidation or disorderly conduct. It also said future primaries would move fully to electronic voting once preparations are completed.
