Kanu’s Lawyer Vows Legal Fight Over Pro – Kanu Protest Trial
Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, legal counsel to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, has pledged to challenge criminal charges brought against him over his involvement in a protest demanding Kanu’s release.
Ejimakor made the declaration on Friday while heading to the Kuje Magistrate Court, where proceedings in the case were scheduled to begin.
He is standing trial alongside activist and AAC presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore and several others. The case stems from a demonstration held in Abuja in 2025.
Ejimakor argued that the prosecution was targeting activities protected under the constitution, including peaceful protest and freedom of expression. He maintained that neither he nor the other defendants committed any offence by participating in the rally.
According to him, the legal team is prepared to mount a strong defence against the charges. He expressed confidence in resisting what he views as an unjust prosecution.
Sowore also reacted ahead of the court session, describing the case as part of a broader effort to silence opposing voices.
He noted that he was expected to appear in two separate courts on the same day. Despite the legal battles, he insisted that campaigns for justice and political freedom would continue.
He maintained that intimidation and court actions would not stop activists from pursuing their cause.
The charges arose from the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest held in Abuja on October 20, 2025. Ejimakor, Sowore, Prince Emmanuel Kanu and other protesters were arrested and later granted bail after meeting conditions set by the court.
They were subsequently arraigned on allegations relating to unlawful assembly and disturbance of public peace. The matter remains before the Kuje Magistrate Court for further hearing.
