Warri Chief Attacks Remi Tinubu Over Local Dispute
A traditional chief in Warri, Delta State, has criticised First Lady Oluremi Tinubu over her reported involvement in issues surrounding the Warri Kingdom.
Speaking at a public event in the oil-producing city, the chief questioned her role in matters affecting the area.
He argued that the country’s First Lady has no constitutional responsibility in such affairs. His comments have added another layer to the ongoing debate over political and traditional issues in Warri.
The chief also expressed concern over rising insecurity across Nigeria, pointing to incidents of kidnapping affecting children and other citizens.
He questioned why more attention was being paid to local political disputes while communities in different parts of the country continued to face security challenges.
According to him, national concerns such as abductions should receive greater focus. His remarks drew attention to the broader issue of public safety.
The comments come amid tensions surrounding the implementation of a ward delineation exercise ordered by the Supreme Court and carried out by the Independent National Electoral Commission in the Warri Federal Constituency.
Indigenous Ijaw groups in the area have backed the exercise and described it as fair. They also accused certain political figures of attempting to obstruct its implementation. The issue has remained a source of disagreement among stakeholders in the constituency.
The dispute recently triggered a peaceful protest by Ijaw and Urhobo stakeholders in Warri.
Demonstrators called for the immediate implementation of the delineation report and urged authorities to allow INEC carry out its duties without interference.
The protest followed a stakeholders’ meeting convened by the Office of the National Security Adviser. Despite those efforts, divisions over the exercise continue to persist.
