UK Govt Raises Concerns Over Ekiti Election BVAS And Vote Buying
The British High Commission in Nigeria has commented on the Ekiti State governorship election held on June 20, 2026.
It said while the process was mostly peaceful and well managed, issues such as BVAS delays, vote trading and poor access for voters with disabilities were observed.
The statement also noted that Governor Abiodun Oyebanji of the APC was re-elected in the poll.
During the election, the UK observer team said cooperation between electoral officials and security agencies helped maintain order.
However, it reported that some polling units were not easy to access for persons with disabilities.
The mission called for better planning to improve inclusiveness ahead of future elections.
The Commission also pointed out technical delays with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System in several locations.
These disruptions slowed voting and affected the process at some polling centres. It warned that such challenges could reduce voter confidence and affect turnout if not fixed.
Cases of vote trading and interference by political agents were also recorded during the exercise.
The British High Commission urged stronger action from stakeholders as attention shifts to upcoming polls, including the Osun election and the 2027 general elections, while pledging continued support for credible elections in Nigeria.
