New Policy Raises Funding Concerns In University
The Federal Government in Abuja has directed public universities to pay lecturers’ allowances using their internal revenue.
The policy covers institutions across Nigeria. It is expected to affect staff welfare and school finances.
The order affects Consequential Adjustment and Transport Allowance for academic staff.
A memo from Modibbo Adama University, Yola showed that the directive came from the Ministry of Education. Universities were told to rely on internally generated funds.
Some universities had already started paying from their own revenue since early 2026. But many say the system is no longer sustainable without federal support.
One institution has now suspended the payments due to lack of funds.
The development has raised fears of possible tuition increases in public universities. Lecturers say schools may be forced to transfer costs to students.
ASUU and other stakeholders warn the policy could worsen pressure on Nigeria’s education system.
