Activist Omoyele Sowore revealed that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has gained celebrity status inside Sokoto Custodial Centre.
Speaking to journalists at Abuja Federal High Court, Sowore said the Nigerian government made a grave mistake by sentencing Kanu to life imprisonment.
He predicted that Justice James Omotosho, who sentenced Kanu, would soon beg for mercy.
Sowore stated, “Nnamdi Kanu is already a celebrity in prison. They say he’s become the president of the prison — probably an honorary title out of respect.
“Soon, they will have to reverse this huge mistake they made regarding Kanu.
“I warned that sending him to prison would be the government’s biggest error.
“Many people we urged to protest his imprisonment are now rushing to Sokoto.
“I ask Kanu’s family to let me facilitate visits so I can tell you the day the judge who sentenced him will come to Sokoto to plead — just as Fela was begged when wronged, if he hasn’t already.
“When Kanu was taken to Sokoto, they thought they could shame him, but he turned Sokoto into another Mecca.
“The government lacks sense and wise counsel. They jailed Kanu, and now he’s a prison celebrity.”
