President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday hosted Abia State Governor Alex Otti at the Presidential Villa in Abuja for discussions reportedly connected to efforts to secure the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment on terrorism-related charges by a Federal High Court in Abuja on November 20, 2025, a ruling that sparked protests and renewed calls for his freedom.

Governor Otti’s visit follows his recent meeting with Kanu at the Sokoto prison, where the IPOB leader is serving his sentence. He was accompanied by Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu; Abia State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna, SAN; and his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma.

After the prison visit, Otti emphasized the state’s determination to explore all lawful avenues to secure Kanu’s release. “While Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has the right to appeal his conviction, I can confirm that the agreed strategy has been activated and will continue until his freedom is achieved,” he said.

Tuesday’s engagement with President Tinubu is viewed as part of a coordinated political and legal effort to seek possible resolutions at the federal level.

Details of the meeting have not been disclosed.
