Rights Group Demands Police Update On Imo Ex Official Case
A rights group in Lagos has asked the police for clarity on a criminal case involving former Ezinihitte Mbaise vice chairman Prince Matthew Igbokwe.
The group, Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre, submitted a petition dated May 5, 2026. It raised concern over the silence surrounding the case since his arrest in April.
The matter has drawn attention due to his role in public office.
The organisation said Igbokwe was arrested by officers of the Nigeria Police Force over claims of car theft and damage to vehicles around FESTAC.
His arrest was earlier mentioned during a police briefing in April. The group noted that the case has stirred public concern, especially as he was still in office at the time.
Local authorities in Imo had also acknowledged the incident.
It added that the Ezinihitte Mbaise council later removed him from office over absence, unauthorised travel, and the allegations tied to the police case.
The council said the situation brought embarrassment to the area. Despite these steps, the group said there has been little public information on what has happened since then.
It stressed that the case carries weight for public trust.
The petition asked the police to disclose the suspect’s status, the progress of the investigation, and whether charges have been filed. It also called for details on evidence handling and any collaboration with Imo police.
The group warned that openness is key to maintaining confidence in the justice system. It said the case offers a chance for authorities to show fairness and accountability.
