Retirees Appeals To Tinubu, Calls For Pension Reform Action
A Nigerian retiree Sebastian Julius Ebhoriaze Ebhohon has urged President Bola Tinubu, state governors and the National Assembly to urgently address the hardship facing pensioners across the country due to delayed gratuity payments and stagnant pensions.
He raised the alarm in an open letter sent to top government officials and labour leaders, saying many retirees who served for over three decades are now struggling with poverty, unpaid entitlements and rising living costs.
The retiree said pension delays often stretch between 12 and 15 years in some states, with several elderly citizens reportedly dying before receiving their benefits.
He also noted that inflation has eroded the value of pensions, leaving retirees unable to afford basic needs and healthcare.
He called for reforms including faster payment of gratuities, pension adjustments tied to inflation, and the creation of a health support system for elderly citizens.
He also urged stronger enforcement against agencies responsible for delayed payments, warning that continued neglect could weaken trust in public service.
