The Senate has given its approval to the appointment of Dr Chukwuemeka Chukwu as the Resident Electoral Commissioner representing Abia State on the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The upper chamber also confirmed the nominations of Aisha Kanti Bello and Dr Animashaun Fouad Olayinka as commissioners of the National Electricity Regulatory Commission. While Bello was confirmed for a second term, Olayinka was approved as a new appointee.
The confirmations were made on Tuesday after the Senate considered reports submitted by the Committee on Electoral Matters, chaired by Senator Simon Lalong, and the Committee on Power, chaired by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe.
Presenting their reports, both committees stated that the nominees satisfied all constitutional and professional criteria required for their respective positions.
Commending the process, Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised lawmakers and the committees for their prompt work. He congratulated the newly confirmed REC and urged him to carry out his duties with fairness and impartiality in the interest of democracy and justice.
Akpabio also lauded President Bola Tinubu for forwarding what he described as a credible list of nominees for the INEC and NERC appointments.
Describing the appointees as well-suited for their roles, he expressed hope that they would be guided by wisdom in serving not only political actors but also Nigerian voters. He further applauded the Senate Committee on Power for its contribution to the confirmation process.
