As the race toward the 2027 elections gathers momentum, Senate Minority Leader and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Abba Moro has suggested that talks are underway to bring Peter Obi and former President Goodluck Jonathan back to the PDP ahead of the presidential contest.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Moro revealed that party stakeholders are reaching out to both men.
“So, in the run-up to 2027, I am aware certain individuals have been talking to Peter Obi, ‘Hey, come back home, this is what we are likely to do, and if you come, you stand a chance of being the candidate’,” he said.
When asked about the likelihood of Jonathan returning to the PDP, the Benue South senator added, “Some persons are talking to the former president to come and run. It is a possibility.”
Jonathan, who governed Nigeria under the PDP from 2010 to 2015, became president following the death of Musa Yar’Adua before winning election in 2011. He lost his reelection bid to Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, becoming the first sitting president to be defeated since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. Since leaving office, Jonathan has maintained a low political profile and has not publicly participated in PDP activities, though he has not resigned from the party.
Obi, on the other hand, is a former PDP vice-presidential candidate who left the party ahead of the 2023 election to contest under the Labour Party (LP). His candidacy gained strong support among Nigeria’s youth, but he finished third behind President Bola Tinubu of the APC and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, securing over six million votes.
With less than two years to the next general election, Obi has teamed up with top opposition figures, including Atiku, under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, while signaling his intention to run for president again. It remains unclear which platform he will eventually contest on.
Meanwhile, calls have continued for Jonathan to re-enter the political fray, though he has not declared any interest in running.
