Award-winning Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has revealed that she doesn’t fully embrace the popular title “Queen of Afrobeats” often used to describe her.
Speaking in a chat with Apple Music’s Ebro, Tiwa said she appreciates the love behind the label but isn’t comfortable carrying it.
“Yeah, they call me the Queen of Afrobeats, but there are a lot of us that are Queens,” she said.
The singer explained that accepting the title would put pressure on her that she isn’t willing to take on.
“Personally, I don’t like that tag, it’s uncomfortable… I don’t accept it. But I appreciate it,” she added.
Tiwa believes the title likely stuck because of her early success in the industry.
“I didn’t come up with it. I think it’s just because I was one of the first female artistes in Nigeria to break through. I do appreciate that. I’m not taking it for granted,” she said.
