Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Belem, Brazil, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference, which begins Tuesday, November 6.

The two-day summit, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in partnership with international stakeholders, is themed “Climate Action and Implementation,” with key focus areas including adaptation, forest protection, biodiversity, and climate justice.

During the summit, Shettima will join world leaders, development partners, and business executives for high-level sessions. On the first day, he is scheduled to present Nigeria’s climate action address at the general plenary, participate in the launch of the Tropical Forest Forever Fund, and join a roundtable on Climate and Nature chaired by President Lula. He will also attend an Amazonian Cocktail for heads of delegation.

On day two, the Vice President will participate in roundtables on energy transition and the review of the Paris Agreement, focusing on countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions and global climate finance. On the sidelines, he will hold bilateral meetings aimed at securing Nigeria’s participation in global carbon markets, expected to unlock $2.5bn–$3bn annually over the next decade to support the country’s emission reduction targets.

After the summit, Shettima will visit Brasília for a reciprocal meeting with Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, who visited Nigeria in June. The visit will focus on strengthening Nigeria–Brazil cooperation in defence, agriculture, energy, and cultural exchange.

The Vice President is expected to return to Nigeria after concluding his engagements in Brazil.
