A young woman in Gubio local government area of Borno State has reportedly taken her own life after allegedly being forced by her father into marriage with one of his friends, sparking shock and outrage across the community.
The tragic incident has drawn attention to the plight of young women facing coercion and forced marriages in the region. Social media reports suggest that the pressure to comply with her father’s demands may have driven the victim to despair, though authorities are still verifying the details.
The Borno State Police Command has launched an investigation into the case. Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, has ordered a discreet inquiry to confirm the circumstances surrounding the report. He called on anyone with credible information to come forward to aid the investigation.
“The Command is committed to uncovering the truth in this matter,” Daso said, while also cautioning the public against spreading unverified information that could cause panic or misrepresentation.
Local child protection volunteer, Bukar Fantami Gubio, urged law enforcement and human rights organisations to ensure a thorough probe and deliver justice for the young woman. He highlighted the urgent need to protect young girls from abuse, exploitation, and coercion.
The incident has sparked widespread concern in Borno State, reigniting calls for stronger measures to safeguard the rights, safety, and dignity of young women.
