Twelve people were reportedly killed on Tuesday night in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State after suspected militia members attacked a mining site in the Ratoso Fan community.
Residents said the assailants stormed the site while miners were working and opened fire on them.
Dallang, a local source, noted that the exact number of missing persons is still unclear due to the attack occurring at night.
The chairman of the Barkin Ladi Environmental and Community Organization (BECO) condemned the incident, saying, “There was an attack at Fan yesterday. It happened in the night, but I cannot give you the exact time.”
The attack has heightened concerns about the safety of mining communities in the region.
