A former president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Supo Ayokunle, has called on President Bola Tinubu to open diplomatic talks with the United States President, Donald Trump, concerning the alleged killings of Christians in Nigeria.
Ayokunle made the appeal during an interview on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, a programme aired on Channels Television.
He described the situation as troubling, noting that the issue should have been addressed long before it reached its present state.
The former CAN leader lamented that insecurity had persisted in the country for more than fifteen years. He warned that a delay in government action could worsen the crisis, urging the Federal Government to engage the American government through diplomatic means rather than allowing tensions to escalate.
According to him, Nigeria should seek assistance directly from Washington if necessary, instead of waiting for foreign intervention.
“President Tinubu should reach out to Donald Trump. If there is any help we need, we should request it.
“We must not wait until the US brings its troops here. Once they come, it will be difficult to send them back. We don’t want another form of imperialism,” Ayokunle said.
His statement comes in response to President Trump’s recent remarks, where he threatened possible military action in Nigeria over reports of attacks on Christians.
Trump disclosed that he had instructed the Pentagon to prepare a response plan if Nigeria failed to end the killings.
