The leadership tussle in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) escalated on Wednesday as Nafiu Bala formally assumed office, declaring himself the party’s authentic National Chairman.
Addressing journalists at the party’s headquarters, Bala insisted that both the Electoral Act and the ADC constitution make him the rightful successor to Ralph Nwosu, who resigned as National Chairman months ago after the opposition coalition adopted the party.
Following Nwosu’s resignation, David Mark was appointed as Interim National Chairman, but Bala—who served as Deputy National Chairman—rejected the move, accusing coalition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, of attempting to hijack the ADC.
“Our party’s former National Chairman voluntarily resigned his position,” Bala said. “Our constitution is very clear on what happens when the chairman steps down. According to both the Electoral Act and our constitution, the Deputy National Chairman takes over leadership. I now assume office as the authentic National Chairman of our great party, the African Democratic Congress.”
