Atiku Challenges NBC Over Media Rules
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised a new election advisory issued by the National Broadcasting Commission.
He said the directive could limit press freedom and restrict open discussion ahead of upcoming polls. The comments came in a statement shared on social media on Saturday.
The development has raised fresh debate over media regulation during elections.
Atiku described the advisory as an attempt to tighten control over the media space. He warned that such moves could weaken the role of journalists in holding leaders accountable.
He also said Nigeria’s media has built a strong reputation and should not face undue pressure. According to him, repeated regulatory actions risk narrowing public debate.
He argued that ethical standards in journalism should be consistent and not applied only during elections.
The former vice president said the timing of the directive raises concerns about possible control of political narratives. He added that broadcasters must be allowed to operate without fear.
The warning comes as political activity begins to rise nationwide.
Atiku expressed support for journalists and media organisations facing regulatory challenges. He cautioned that strict controls could reduce trust in the electoral process.
The issue has sparked wider concerns about balancing regulation and free expression. The situation is expected to remain a key topic as elections approach.
