Court Halts Inquiry Into Adichie’s Child Death Case
The Lagos State High Court in Osborne, Ikoyi, has ordered a temporary suspension of the coroner’s inquest into the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege, following a legal challenge from Eurapharma Care Services Nigeria Limited, operators of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Victoria Island.
The court order came after concerns raised over how the inquest was being handled, as the hospital’s legal team argued that key procedural steps were not properly followed.
They also questioned the basis of the inquiry, stating that the child’s remains had already been cremated before the proceedings began.
At the same time, the Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel reportedly moved against some medical staff linked to the case.
The panel is said to have taken disciplinary action against the hospital’s Medical Director and two other healthcare workers over alleged negligence in the treatment of the child.
The case has been adjourned to June 9, 2026, while the court considers the main legal issues.
All proceedings at the coroner’s court remain on hold as the matter continues in line with judicial review procedures.
