Bala Dumps PDP, Makinde Next To Follow
In Nigeria, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has left the Peoples Democratic Party for the Allied Peoples Movement, while Seyi Makinde is set to follow amid deepening party crisis.
The move comes after months of internal division and legal battles that have weakened the party’s structure nationwide. Both governors were among the last key figures holding the party together.
Mohammed confirmed his exit after consultations with allies, pointing to the Supreme Court ruling on the party’s leadership dispute as a turning point. The judgment, which voided rival conventions, created uncertainty over control and direction. The development left factions struggling for legitimacy, with camps linked to Nyesom Wike asserting influence.
Makinde is also weighing his options, with insiders saying he may leave soon and possibly join either the Nigeria Democratic Congress or the APM.
Reports indicate he has already asked party aspirants in Oyo not to proceed under the PDP, though his spokesperson denies any final decision.
The timeline is tight as electoral guidelines require early registration ahead of primaries.
Mohammed described his switch as a strategic step to secure a stable platform free from legal disputes.
He said the decision was driven by the need to maintain political continuity and protect his supporters’ interests.
Party leaders in his new camp have welcomed him, saying the platform offers a clear path without internal conflict.
