Borussia Dortmund have signed England youth international Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea on a five-year deal.
The 21-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Dortmund, joins permanently in a transfer worth up to £24m. Chukwuemeka made 32 appearances for Chelsea after joining from Aston Villa for £20m in 2022.
Chelsea defender Aaron Anselmino is also set to move to Dortmund on a season-long loan, with the player already in Germany to finalize the deal.
Chukwuemeka’s sale takes Chelsea’s summer transfer income past £270m, almost offsetting the £277m spent on new arrivals. UEFA has instructed the club to maintain a positive transfer balance this window to ensure their new signings can be registered for this season’s Champions League.
This follows a £26.7m fine for breaching UEFA’s financial rules and the club’s squad cost ratio — the percentage of income spent on wages — exceeding 80%.
Several Chelsea players could still leave before Monday’s transfer deadline, including Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, Tyrique George, Raheem Sterling, and Ben Chilwell. Meanwhile, the club is also eyeing potential reinforcements, with Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho and RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons among those linked.
