Calls Grow For EFCC Probe Over Teen Death
A lawyer, Marshal Abubakar, has called for an independent investigation into the death of 16-year-old Asar Sesugh in Makurdi, Benue State.
The demand follows allegations that operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission were involved in the incident.
The case has drawn public attention and renewed debate about the conduct of anti-graft agencies.
According to Abubakar, the teenager, a Junior Secondary School student, was allegedly arrested and later became involved in circumstances that ended in his death on May 23, 2026.
He cited accounts from the boy’s family and witnesses while raising concerns about the actions of the agency and the handling of the case.
The lawyer also criticised what he described as harsh bail conditions and detention practices often linked to investigations.
He argued that some procedures used by law enforcement agencies conflict with constitutional rights and court decisions, adding that reforms are needed to strengthen accountability and public trust.
Abubakar urged authorities to set up an impartial panel to examine the facts surrounding the incident and determine responsibility where necessary.
Meanwhile, the EFCC has denied wrongdoing, maintaining that its operatives acted within the law and insisting that the circumstances of the teenager’s death have been misrepresented.
