FG Needs More Taxpayers, Not Higher Taxes – Oyedele
The Federal Government has said Nigeria should focus on bringing more people into the tax system instead of increasing taxes.
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, made the position known while speaking on the country’s tax direction.
He explained that widening the number of taxpayers would generate more revenue without placing extra pressure on individuals and businesses already meeting their tax obligations.
According to him, this approach would create a fairer tax system.
Oyedele noted that many eligible individuals and businesses remain outside the tax net, limiting government revenue.
He said expanding tax compliance would strengthen public finances and support national development.
The minister added that ongoing tax reforms are aimed at improving collection, encouraging voluntary compliance and making the system more efficient, rather than introducing heavier tax burdens on Nigerians.
