Imo electoral officials head to Jerusalem on governor sponsorship
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State is sponsoring a pilgrimage to Jerusalem for top electoral officials in the state, including the Resident Electoral Commissioner, several Heads of Department, and 27 Electoral Officers.
The trip is set to begin on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, with the delegation gathering at the Government House Chapel for prayers and a formal send-off before heading to the airport in Owerri.
The delegation is led by Professor Sylvia Agu, Imo State’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, and includes Esther Okorie (Operations), Barrister Onyinye Nwankwo (Legal), and Agnes Elukpo (ICT). The 27 Electoral Officers are drawn from across the state, covering all local government areas, including Aboh Mbaise, Mbaise, Obowo, Oru East, Ihitte Uboma, Onuimo, Isiala Mbano, Ideato South, Ngor Okpala, Owerri North, and others.
The governor’s sponsorship of the pilgrimage has sparked concern among electoral stakeholders, who warn that gifts or benefits from sitting governors could compromise the perceived neutrality and independence of INEC.
In a politically sensitive state like Imo, where elections have been contentious in recent years, maintaining public confidence in the electoral process is seen as crucial.
Sources within INEC say such trips, especially when funded by political figures, could deepen mistrust among voters and raise questions about electoral impartiality.
The pilgrimage comes amid ongoing debates about the influence of executive officials on electoral processes in Nigeria, with critics calling for stricter safeguards to ensure that the independence of electoral officers is preserved and public confidence in elections is maintained.
