Controversial Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has called for the introduction of a “Marshall Plan” to gradually phase out the Almajiri system in Northern Nigeria.
Gumi said the region has the capacity to lead Nigeria’s education sector within the next 15 years if the Almajiri system is properly dismantled.
He hinged his argument on the presence of about 150 public and private universities across Northern Nigeria.
In a post shared on X, the cleric stated that the region has enough educational institutions to drive meaningful progress if appropriate policies are implemented.
According to him, a Marshall Plan should be adopted to replace the Almajiri system with a curriculum that blends moral instruction with modern education.
Gumi stressed that peace is a key requirement for the success of the proposed plan.
He said: “Northern Nigeria, with approximately 150 public (federal and state) and private universities, is expected to lead the educational sector of Nigerian society in the next fifteen years.
“What should be done is to implement a ‘Marshall Plan’ to phase out the Almajiri system, combining a curriculum that blends moral education with modernity. Therefore, we need peace.”
