IPOB Declares May 30 Sit-at-home
The Indigenous People of Biafra has announced a sit-at-home across the South-East on May 30, 2026, to honour people killed during the Biafran War between 1967 and 1970.
The group described the action as a yearly memorial for fallen Biafran heroes and heroines.
In a statement issued by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, IPOB asked residents across the region and those in the diaspora to observe the day quietly and avoid business, social events and public gatherings.
The group also urged governors in the South-East to fly Nigerian flags at half-mast in memory of victims of the war.
IPOB said the remembrance was meant to honour soldiers, civilians and supporters who lost their lives during the conflict and later clashes linked to Biafra remembrance activities.
The group insisted the May 30 exercise was different from the suspended Monday sit-at-home order cancelled earlier this year by its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
The announcement comes months after the group ended the weekly Monday sit-at-home across the South-East following pressure from traders, residents and state authorities.
IPOB maintained that the May 30 action remains a symbolic annual event dedicated to remembrance and reflection.
