Jonathan 2027 Plan Is Tearing PDP Apart
Fresh divisions have emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party as rival factions clashed over plans to endorse former President Goodluck Jonathan for the 2027 presidential election.
Supporters of Nyesom Wike rejected the move, while the faction led by Tanimu Turaki insisted it would go ahead with a convention in Abuja.
The dispute followed an announcement by the Turaki-led group to ratify Jonathan’s candidacy, despite the earlier presentation of Sandy Onor as the party’s flag bearer.
PDP spokesman Jungudo Mohammed dismissed the planned convention as unauthorised and urged party members to ignore it.
Tension grew further after the Turaki faction accused Wike of trying to stop a venue from hosting the gathering.
The group claimed it had completed all arrangements for the event and vowed to proceed. It argued that political opposition should not be suppressed through intimidation or interference.
The controversy also drew attention from the Federal Capital Territory Administration, which warned event centres and hotels against hosting groups it considers illegal.
The administration said facilities used for such activities risk losing their land titles. It also urged venue owners to deal only with recognised political party leaderships in line with electoral regulations.
