Kidnapping, Banditry Threatens Democracy – Kalejaye Warns Tinubu
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kunle Kalejaye, has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a national emergency on banditry, kidnapping and terrorism.
He warned that rising insecurity is putting Nigeria’s democratic stability and national survival at risk. The legal expert made the appeal during his Democracy Day message.
He said urgent action is needed to prevent further decline in security.
Kalejaye, who is based in Ibadan and also chairs Eagle FM in Ilese-Ijebu, described the current wave of attacks as troubling for the country’s image.
He said Nigeria is being viewed negatively both at home and abroad due to continued violence. According to him, stronger government action is required to restore public confidence.
He added that insecurity has reached a dangerous level across communities.
He raised concern over cases where criminals disguise themselves in military uniforms during attacks. He said this has affected trust in the armed forces and created fear among citizens.
Kalejaye warned that the reputation of the military could suffer further if the trend continues. He stressed that decisive steps are needed to restore confidence in security institutions.
The senior lawyer said insecurity is no longer limited to rural areas but is now spreading into cities. He urged the government to adopt clear and coordinated strategies to dismantle terrorist networks.
He added that democracy loses meaning when citizens cannot live in safety. He insisted that a firm national response is needed to confront the crisis.
