The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that Shamsideen Adio, a leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) better known as Shameleon, will be arraigned on Friday over the alleged murder of a dispatch rider on Lagos Island.

Adio, 55, was arrested after reportedly assaulting the rider during a scuffle on Tapa Street on September 17, 2025. Eyewitnesses said the clash began when the rider allegedly blocked Adio’s vehicle.

The situation quickly escalated, with Adio allegedly joined by friends and colleagues who beat the rider mercilessly. A video published by SaharaReporters shows Adio repeatedly punching the victim while onlookers stood by without intervening.

Witnesses said the rider was struck multiple times with a helmet and fists until he collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Bababseyi Oluseyi confirmed that Adio is being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, and will face arraignment on Friday.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has also weighed in, calling for full prosecution. Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, Adewale Adedeji, condemned the killing, describing it as “barbaric, shameful, inhuman, and heartbreaking.”

He urged the police to ensure Adio and his accomplices face justice and called on NURTW leadership, led by Alhaji Adekunle Mustapha Seigo, to suspend Adio and distance the union from the “lawless behavior.”

“The NURTW to which Shamsideen belongs should be a professional union and does not deserve members who are lawless, do not see their fellow beings as humans enough, or who think that their actions should be overlooked,” Adedeji added.
