The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has increased its number of governors to 26 following the addition of Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas and the imminent defection of Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang.
A source within the APC’s National Working Committee (NWC) confirmed that Mutfwang’s defection process is complete, and he has already met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Originally elected under the faction-ridden Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mutfwang is expected to formally join the APC in the coming days, ending speculation about his political loyalty ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Contrary to rumours that the national chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, was opposing Mutfwang’s defection, the party insider dismissed such claims as false.
Last week, Mutfwang reportedly informed Chairman Yilwatda of his decision to leave the PDP and join the APC.
Interestingly, Yilwatda, who is also from Plateau State, had been Mutfwang’s opponent in the previous governorship election.
Following the governor’s announcement, Yilwatda arranged a brief meeting between Mutfwang and President Tinubu at Aso Villa in Abuja.
The source said, “Governor Mutfwang was taken to Aso Villa to meet with the president after informing the chairman of his decision to join the APC. The governor, who had always expressed loyalty to the PDP, finally made up his mind. He informed the chairman last Tuesday, and the chairman took him to the president on Sunday. He will be formally received into the party very soon.”
The NWC member added that Taraba Governor Agbu Kefas is now officially recognised as an APC member, despite delaying his reception event due to national sensitivities.
“We now have 26 governors in APC, with Kefas included. He postponed his reception to respect the current national mood,” the official explained.
