Newcastle United has reacted to striker Alexander Isak’s accusations that the club failed to honor promises regarding his future
The Swedish forward, who joined Newcastle in 2022, took to Instagram on Tuesday night, expressing frustration over what he described as broken commitments, particularly amid Liverpool’s failed attempt to sign him.
“I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn’t reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors,” Isak wrote. “When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”
In response, Newcastle said Isak remains under contract and insisted no agreement was ever made for him to leave this summer.
“We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer,” the club said in a statement. “We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views. The conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired, and we do not foresee those conditions being met.”
The club added a conciliatory note, emphasizing that Isak remains part of their plans despite being left out of recent matchday squads.
“This is a proud football club with proud traditions, and we strive to retain our family feel. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates,” Newcastle stated.
Liverpool had reportedly made a significant bid for Isak, which was rejected, and speculation continues that the standoff could impact the final weeks of the transfer window.
