Nigeria Officials Involved In Killings Of Christians – US Senator
A United States lawmaker, Ted Cruz, has accused Nigerian officials of being linked to attacks on Christians, raising the issue during a Senate hearing on counterterrorism in Africa.
He claimed Nigeria records the highest number of faith-based killings and said authorities had failed to act decisively.
The allegation has drawn pushback, with former minister Lai Mohammed rejecting claims of targeted persecution.
Speaking in the United Kingdom, he argued that insurgent violence affects both Muslims and Christians, insisting the crisis is driven by broader security challenges rather than religion.
Cruz also pointed to a bill he introduced aimed at holding Nigerian officials accountable, while questioning US officials on progress in security cooperation.
In response, Nick Checker said Nigeria has taken some steps, including security reforms and increased prosecution of suspects, though more action is needed.
The debate comes as Nigeria continues to battle insurgency linked to Boko Haram and other armed groups.
While concerns over violence persist, officials maintain that the situation is complex and not tied to a deliberate campaign against any religious group.
